Open Caching Comes Alive at NAB Show 2025 with Open CDN™ — Plus New Developments from the SVTA

We’re here on Day 3 of the 2025 NAB Show, and you may have already stopped by the Vecima booth for a demo. Vecima’s Open CDN™ is an implementation of the non-proprietary Open Caching specifications published by the Streaming Video Technology Alliance. Open CDN aggregates cache capacity deep in ISP networks to provide a CDN alternative for content providers, reducing public CDN costs and improving customer quality of experience.

If you’re unfamiliar, Open Caching defines a common language for Content Providers and CDNs, reducing the burden of integration and easing the friction of implementing a multi-CDN strategy. Open Caching covers the core pillars of managing a CDN: traffic delegation, configuration, observability, and content management.

The specifications are constantly evolving within the SVTA working groups, branching out to cover the major CDN use cases. In the last year, we’ve seen version 2.0 of the extensive Configuration Management Interface, a new Bootstrap Interface, and the publication of the new Logging specification. For more details on logging and other aspects of observability, see the paper I co-authored with Nick Dunkin, which was published at the 2024 SCTE TechExpo: The Multi-CDN Dilemma: Aggregated Edge Networks at Scale.

We just held the SVTA Q1 Member meeting last month in Tucson, and the working groups were hard at work on new functionality, such as custom log fields and support for other technologies, like multicast, via the new Open Casting project.

Mature SVTA documents often reach the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for publication as Internet Drafts. We’ve brought a host of new documents to the Content Delivery Networks Interconnection (CDNI) working group, and some of the previous work, like the Capacity Insights Interface, is in the final stages and on its way to becoming an approved RFC. Vecima is committed to open standards and specifications, and that shows through our passionate participation in bodies like CDNI and the SVTA Open Caching working groups.

If you’re here at the NAB Show and haven’t yet stopped by for a visit, you still have time. Vecima is easily found in the West Hall by entrance W3 (booth W3323).

Open CDN provides a compelling solution for relieving network congestion, improving QoE, and reducing costs. While you’re on the stand, you can also see a demo of KeyFrame, an innovative solution from our partner Digital Harmonic that combines video quality improvements with dramatically lowered bitrate.

See you on the show floor!
